Enchanted Circle

The Enchanted Circle drive starts out as “The Old Spanish National Historic Trail known as the “longest, crookedest, most arduous pack mule route in the history of America” runs through New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, Utah, Nevada and California. It opened a land route across 19th century Mexico between Tierra Adentro (New Mexico) and California.” – Old Spanish National Historic Trail

The Enchanted circle is part of the National Scenic Byways. It is 85 miles long and takes about 3 hours to circumnavigate Wheeler Peak. It starts with wide open farm land then climbs to 9,800 feet just after the Red River Ski area at Bobcat Pass. Then back down to rolling and open farm land on the east side passing through Elizabethtown and Eagle river before turning west again at Angle Fire, climbing once again back over the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and on to Taos.

And of course we had to make a lunch stop on the way back to El Prado. This time to Toribio’s. The shrimp and fish soft tacos were excellent!
